  • Support Your Child in Maths at Home

At Emley, we believe that postive attitudes to maths  are just important as learning number facts. You don't need to be a maths expert to help your child - simple everyday support makes a big difference.

    1. Build Confidence and a Positive Mindset

    • Encourage your child to have a go and reassure them that mistakes help us learn.
    • Avoid saying “I was never good at maths” – this can affect children’s confidence.
    • Praise effort and perseverance, not just correct answers

    2. Talk About Maths in Everyday Life

Maths is all around us! Try involving your child in:

    • Cooking and baking (measuring, weighing, timing)
    • Shopping (adding prices, working out change)
    • Telling the time and reading timetables
    • Counting steps, coins, or objects around the house

    3. Practise Key Skills Regularly

    Short, frequent practice is best.

    • Encourage number bonds (e.g. numbers that make 10 or 20)
    • Practise times tables little and often (makes a great car journey game)
    • Play maths games, card games, or board games involving number

    4. Encourage Mental Maths - Ask questions like:

    • “How did you work that out?”
    • “Is there another way?”
    • “Does that answer make sense?”

This helps children explain their thinking and build deeper understanding.

    5. Use Online Resources and Games

Educational websites and apps can make maths fun and interactive. These should be used to support learning, not replace practical activities.

    6. Know When to Ask for Help

If your child is finding maths challenging:

    • Encourage them to talk to their teacher
    • Contact the school if you have concerns – we’re here to help
